Book “Povo do Sal”

11/29/23, 3:00 PM

In a partnership between Instituto Sabiá and UFERSA, researchers Rogério Taygra and Thyciana Vasconcelos announced the launch of the Book “Povo do Sal” (People of Salt). The work is the result of the “Ekosal” project, which had the active participation of researchers, professors, and students dedicated to the environmental regularization of artisanal salt pans in the municipality of Grossos/RN.

The Book not only highlights the historical, cultural, and economic importance of artisanal salt pans but also offers an in-depth view of the challenges faced and the potential of this age-old activity. The data and information provided aim to support actions focused on promoting the sustainability of artisanal salt production, still unknown by a large part of the population.

Professor Rogério Taygra emphasizes that the publication seeks to fill this knowledge gap, presenting relevant data on the activity and highlighting its potential, while also addressing the challenges that salt producers face. The Book aims to be a valuable guide for those seeking to understand and preserve this age-old practice.

In addition to the support of UFERSA and Instituto Sabiá, the work had the essential collaboration of the Institute for Economic Development and Environment (IDEMA), the Research Support Foundation of Rio Grande do Norte (FAPERN), the Municipal Prefecture of Grossos, and, at the time, state deputy Souza.

The launch of the Book “Povo do Sal” represents not only a milestone in disseminating the rich history of artisanal salt pans but also a significant initiative to promote awareness and preservation of this cultural and environmental heritage in Brazil.
