The SS Rio Grande was a German-flagged steam cargo ship, built in 1939. It was sunk on January 4, 1944, by order of its own captain when located and intercepted by the cruiser USS Omaha and the destroyer Jouett. It carried a cargo consisting of approximately 500 tons of tin, 2370 tons of copper, raw rubber in bales of 245 kilos each, and 311 tons of cobalt. Its hull was located by the company Blue Water Recovery on November 28, 1996.
