[Source 1] Public company created "through a contract signed between the Ministério da Agricultura, Comércio e Obras Públicas and the citizens Barão de Jaceguai, Dr. Antonio Paulo de Mello Barreto, and Comendador Manoel José da Fonseca, authorized by decreto n. 208, of 01/19/1890, for the purposes of merging the shipping companies subsidized by the Brazilian State, assisting in the maritime defense of Brazil, and maintaining maritime personnel fit for war service." [Source 2] Lists the exports that departed from Maceió to various national destinations. Among the ports is that of Parahyba, with volumes sent in the three months covered by the report. [Source 3] The company's agent in the provincial capital was Augusto Gomes e Silva, the same agent for the "Companhia Pernambucana de Navegação á Steamship". Departures for the "North" originated from Rio de Janeiro, with packet boats leaving on the "12th, 22nd, and 28th of each month" and calling ("tocavam") at Cabedelo only "on their return south on the 2nd, 8th, 14th, and 22nd of each month, approximately". The packet boats that followed this route (Linha do Norte) were: "Brazil, S. Salvador, Olinda, Manáos, Maranhão, Alagôas, Espirito Santo, Pernambuco, and Planeta". In the price table, Lloyd Brazileiro steamers were of two types: "Ré" (Stern) and "Convez" (Deck). The ports in the price table were organized into South and North. "Round-trip tickets have a 15% discount. Tickets purchased by the Government have a 25% discount. (...) "In steerage, children under 2 years old do not pay passage; those from 2 to under 3 years old pay 1/4, and those from 3 to under 10 years old pay 1/2 passage. In the bow, children under 2 years old do not pay passage; from that age onwards, they pay full passage. Tickets purchased on board cost 15% more." Passengers who do not continue their journey lose half of their fare, while those who stay "at any port of call are not entitled to any refund." It is not possible to transfer tickets, either to another person or another packet boat. The baggage allowance for each passenger was "300 cubic decimeters" (300 liters), "for those in steerage, and 150, for those in the bow." Excess baggage was paid for as "encommenda" (parcel).
