Conservation status
The most grandiose and well-restored colonial structure in the city. Restored after the 1929 earthquake. Well preserved.

Construction in coral rock; star-shaped plan with 4 points; strategic location on the hilltop; survived pirate attacks and earthquakes; used as a prison (Páez, Monagas). Monumento Histórico Nacional (1965). Spanish military architecture.
