The current fortress dates from the 16th or 17th century, but was built on the remains of an earlier Roman fortress, which in turn stood on a pre-Roman settlement.

Main characteristics
Located on the left bank of the mouth of the Nalón River. It consists of a square-plan tower with three floors, topped by 16 battlements. It owes its name to a chapel dedicated to San Martín that it housed inside. Its strategic location allowed it to control the entrance to the estuary and river traffic.
