Main characteristics
Building with a quadrangular plan, with a central courtyard and towers at the corners. Built in Mudéjar style. It was part of a line of medieval fortifications on the Atlantic coast of Cádiz, together with the castles of Rota and El Puerto de Santa María. The exterior wall is two meters thick. It features unique architectural elements such as parapets in the central courtyard and sundials on the towers. The site where it stands, next to the old Royal Carenero and near the Zuazo Bridge, was fundamental to the formation of the city of San Fernando (formerly Isla de León).
