Construction Date
The castle was built on the remains of a previous church, possibly in the 13th century. The lighthouse was added in the 19th century.
Conservation status
Considered one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Cantabria. It is open to visitors. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

Main characteristics
Fortress situated on the highest point of the rocky peninsula, next to the Gothic church of Santa María de la Asunción. It dominates the port and the bay. The medieval castle's structure stands out for its absence of complex defensive elements, relying on its elevated position. In the 19th century, a lighthouse was integrated into the structure, which still functions as a guide for vessels. It offers excellent panoramic views over the coast and the Cantabrian Sea.
