Conservation status
The best-preserved fort on the island. Restored (completed 1968), serves as a museum. Restoration in progress mentioned (before 2022). Generally considered well-preserved.

Main characteristics
Classic example of Spanish military architecture; square plan with a star-shaped base; 4 towers/bastions; thick stone walls; moat (never filled); protected the bay and customs house from pirates. Sacked several times; used in the war of independence. Monumento Histórico Nacional (1965).
