Main characteristics

Located on the promontory of the same name, the southwesternmost point of continental Europe, described as "where the land ends and the sea begins". It has a polygonal plan with bastions at the angles and batteries facing the sea. A large curtain wall closes off land access, with a cavalier (elevated defensive structure) in the middle, under which the main gate is located. Inside, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça (longitudinal plan, single nave, and quadrangular chancel), some support buildings, and the enigmatic "Rosa dos Ventos" (Wind Rose), a large circular pavement whose original function is Unknown, stand out. The extreme location and the historical and legendary association with the Discoveries give Sagres a symbolic and cultural value that transcends its specific military architecture, explaining its tourist importance and recognition with the European Heritage Label in 2015. The presence of the "Rosa dos Ventos" fuels mystery and academic debate about the activities that took place there, reinforcing interest in the site. It also has a contemporary art center.
