Initial Portuguese fortification 1762; rebuilt by the Spanish 1763; current structure 1765-1775 (Bartolomé Howel), reinforced 1775 (Bernardo Lecocq).
Conservation status
Fell into decay, then abandoned. Rediscovered and restored (1928-1940s) by Horacio Arredondo. Well-preserved historical-military museum, managed by the Army. One of the three main remaining colonial bastions in South America.

Irregular pentagonal shape (5 bastions); massive granite walls (double layer); perimeter 652m; 41 embrasures, 5 sentry boxes; main gate and sally port; internal granite buildings (barracks, chapel, powder magazine, dungeons). Part of the Spanish defensive line. Monumento Histórico Nacional (1927).
