Construction began in 1909 under President Afonso Penna and was inaugurated in September 1914 by Marshal Hermes da Fonseca.
Conservation status
Provisionally listed in 1990 and definitively in 1991 by INEPAC (Instituto Estadual do Patrimônio Cultural). The structure houses a museum with a collection of fifteen thousand pieces.

Main characteristics
Located on the tip of Copacabana, between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. It occupies an area of approximately 114,000 m². Built in the form of an underground vaulted casemate, with external walls up to 22 meters thick. Considered a challenge for military engineering at the time. Main artillery composed of German Krupp cannons in mobile armored cupolas. Built on the site of an old church that gave its name to the neighborhood. Scene of important historical events, such as the 'Revolt of the 18 of the Fort' in 1922 and the deposition of President Washington Luís in 1930. Fired warning shots against the Cruiser Tamandaré in 1955. Designed as a modern coastal fortress in the early 20th century. Since 1987, it has functioned as the Museu Histórico do Exército, preserving and disseminating the memory of the Exército Brazileiro. It is also an important cultural and tourist space.
