Main characteristics
Located between the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra and the Forte São Diogo, complementing the defense of the entrance to the Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints' Bay), this fort was the third fortification built in Barra for the defense of Salvador. It participated in the battles against the Dutch in 1624 and 1638. At the end of the 17th century, it gained its current stone structure with a rectangular shape, located by the sea. It remained in operation until the end of the 19th century, when it was abandoned. In 1938, it was listed by IPHAN (National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute) and began to function for other activities. The fortification is part of the complex nominated for UNESCO World Heritage.
