Considered one of Salvador's most significant monuments, this small fort, built of stone on the reef about 300 meters from the coast, has a circular and robust shape, with a strictly maritime defense function, controlling access to the city's port. Damaged during the Dutch attacks of 1624 and 1638, it was called Forte de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo from the 1670s. In the 18th century, it confronted privateers and pirates, also serving as a prison throughout the 19th century, during which time it had a small lighthouse. It was listed in 1938 and, due to its location and unique architecture, became an important tourist attraction, serving tourism purposes since 2004. The fortification is part of the ensemble nominated for UNESCO World Heritage.
