Main characteristics
Part of the defensive system of São Luís, the fort served to defend access to the city's port. Its privileged location allowed a wide field of vision of the bay and part of the island. Initially a redoubt, it was later enlarged and reinforced, becoming a fort. It underwent reforms throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, gaining a lighthouse in 1831. However, it was abandoned in the 20th century and fell into ruin. Its ruins were listed by IPHAN in 1974.
