Construction Date

Built in 1668 on an old castle (Castillo de la Torrecilla). It was the first defensive fortification of the Bay of Santoña.

Conservation status

Declared Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) with the category of Historical Monument in 1992. It is currently private property and is in a state of abandonment, although it can be visited externally and is accessible by footpaths.

Main characteristics

Located on the slope of Monte Buciero, controlling the entrance to the bay. It has an L-shaped gallery with a terrace and barbette for cannons. The lower battery has two firing levels: one casemated (covered) and an upper one at barbette, with positions for cannons and a parapet for rifle fire. An advance to the southeast reinforced the defense. With 37 cannons, it was essential in the defense of the port.
