Museum Characteristics
Housed in the Capitania do Porto de Faro (Port Authority building) since 1962. It was organized from the collection of the former Maritime Industrial Museum. The collection is ethnographically focused on the maritime activity and fishing arts of the Algarve region.
Collection Type
Fishing boats, other vessels, fishing gear and utensils, onboard instruments and materials. It includes pieces that were at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition and has a library with a scientific collection.

The collection is displayed in three distinct rooms: Baldaque da Silva, Lyster Franco, and Manuel Bívar.
Observations
The original collection was formally handed over to the Navy in 1916. Commander Ramalho Ortigão, after whom the museum is named, significantly contributed to its preservation and organization. It is a branch of the Navy Museum in Lisbon.
