The Forte de Cabedelo (or Fortaleza de Santa Catarina) has a unique history. The primitive construction of the fortification dates back to 1585. This first building, destroyed by the indigenous people, was rebuilt in 1592. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Forte de Cabedelo was considered a fundamental military vector for the Spanish defensive planning for the South Atlantic.

Listed by IPHAN in 1938, since 1991 the Fortress has been maintained through shared management, using exclusively its own resources from the collection of visitation fees, contributions from volunteers, and the Government of the State of Paraíba.
