Atlanticus: Volume 3
The Atlanticus Journal reaches its third year of publication in 2024. This date coincides with two important anniversaries. The first refers to the 500th anniversary of the birth of the poet Luís de Camões (1524-1580), considered the first great poet of the Portuguese language.
Camões is the author of the monumental ""Os Lusíadas"" (1572), an epic poem that celebrates the glories of the Kingdom of Portugal, highlighting Vasco da Gama's journey to India (1497-1499). This anniversary marks a significant moment for Lusophone culture.
The second commemorative date refers to the 150th anniversary of Italian Immigration to Brazil (1875), initiated by an agreement with the Império do Brazil to bring cheap labor to work mainly on the coffee plantations of the province of São Paulo.
Although Italians had previously visited Brazil as merchants or travelers, the migratory process began on February 21, 1875, with the arrival of the ship La Sofia, carrying 400 Italians. In the following decades, thousands more came to the country.
