Uma história da alimentação: Volume 1
The work is divided into three parts: the first explores the history of sugar, the second focuses on various foods, and the third discusses some beverages. Each chapter follows a similar structure, with an introduction and biological information about the plants, as all items, except milk, are of plant origin.
Next, a historical account unfolds from Prehistory or Antiquity to the Contemporary era, covering themes such as economy, politics, geographical expansion, health uses, and sometimes, magic. The work also examines the association of foods and beverages with religious beliefs and addresses industrialization.
Although essentially a work of cultural history about food, the Book also explores themes from social, political, economic, religious, and global history, as well as philology, mythology, sociology, and anthropology. The simple language allows readers to be enchanted by the stories of popular foods and drinks.
Thus, the work makes it possible to understand the significant impacts these foods and beverages have had throughout history, offering a comprehensive and accessible view of the evolution of human diet and its influence on various aspects of society.
