MERCHANT VESSELS

Introduction

Included data

Temporal and spatial scope

The waters of the Atlantic between the 19th and 20th centuries were the scene of an important transition in navigation. Vessels such as barques, barges, brigs, and steamers were present in the shift from the dominance of winds to the first steam technologies.

Thus, as already mentioned, the data presented result from research into Brazilian documents from the 19th and 20th centuries, a crucial period for Atlantic maritime trade.

This database gathers information on merchant vessels that navigated the Atlantic during the 19th and 20th centuries. The main data source for the research is the "Port Movement" section of Brazilian newspapers of the time.
