ATLANTICUS: EXEA MUSEUM JOURNAL

General Rules

Journal specialized in the study of the Atlantic Ocean.

The journal Atlanticus is an annual publication, publishing articles and entries in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. It accepts contributions from authors ranging from graduates to PhDs, or from specialists in a topic or area within the journal's scope.

The evaluation will be conducted by blind peer review or ad hoc, by at least two reviewers. Should there be conflicts between the reviews, a third reviewer will be assigned.

Submitted works must comply with the required guidelines and be grammatically correct and proofread. Submissions that do not meet these requirements will be returned for adjustments. The journal does not provide grammatical revision.

Interviews and the use of images of living non-public individuals must be accompanied by an image release form.

According to Brazilian Law No. 9,610/98, plagiarism and self-plagiarism are considered crimes. Submissions found to contain elements that constitute these offenses will be rejected.

Submissions must be original and must not have been previously published or be under consideration by another journal, institution, or other outlet.

The journal Atlanticus adheres to the principles of the Heridia Declaration (2024) regarding the use of AI programs in scientific research and production. In this regard, if authors make use of any type of AI program, they must disclose in a footnote the software used and for what purpose. Transparency is expected regarding the use of AI for generating images, data collection, translations, etc.

The journal Atlanticus accepts submissions on a rolling basis for its sections. However, if there is a high volume of submissions for an issue, the editors will decide whether some of the surplus submissions will be published in the next issue.

Note on the number of authors:

The number of authors for articles will depend on the submission area within the journal, and is as follows:

  • History, Museology, and Law: up to 3 authors;

  • Heritage: up to 5 authors;

  • Archaeology: up to 10 authors.

The author(s) of the submitted original agree to the following:

  • All authors are publicly responsible for this.

  • The author(s) declare that this original is their own work and that they assume full responsibility towards third parties, whether moral or financial, due to its content, affirming that the work is free of plagiarism and/or self-plagiarism.

  • The author(s) agree that their work will not perpetuate prejudice, discrimination, hate speech, and false or defamatory information.

  • The author(s) agree to the copyright of the original work with the Atlanticus journal, and grant it permission for its reproduction, editing, and online publication.

  • The author(s) assign the copyright of their original work to the journal, which allows the sharing of this work with attribution to the author(s).

 

OPEN ACCESS POLICY

This journal provides immediate open access to its content, based on the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public promotes greater global democratization of knowledge. Furthermore, the journal reaffirms the policy of the EXEA Maritime Virtual Museum and its three pillars: Research, Preserve, and Educate.

ARTICLES

  1. Submissions should be in Word or OpenOffice format.

  2. Titles and subtitles should be in Calisto MT font, size 14, and centered.

  3. Section titles should be in Calisto MT font, size 11, bold, and left-aligned.

  4. The abstract must be up to 250 words, outlining the subject matter, object or source of study, main objective, methodology or method applied, and main theory or theorist used.

  5. The abstract should be written in size 11 with 1.15 line spacing.

  6. Three to five keywords should be used, separated by semicolons.

  7. Articles in Portuguese or Spanish must include an abstract in English.

  8. Articles in English must include an abstract in Portuguese.

  9. Article text must be written according to the attached template, using Calisto MT font, size 12, 1.5 line spacing, justified alignment, paragraphs with a 3 cm indent, and left and right margins of 2.5 cm.

  10. Articles should be 12 to 25 pages long.

  11. The author(s)' name(s) will be placed on the right side, below the title/subtitle, and a footnote will provide their qualification(s), institutional affiliation, and contact email. Brazilian authors must provide a link to their Currículo Lattes and Orcid. Foreign authors must provide Orcid or equivalent..

  12. The author(s)' name(s) and information will only be added to the final version of the text if accepted for publication. Prior to that, it will be omitted from the body of the text to ensure blind review. This information should be submitted as an attached document along with the submitted work.

  13. Quotes of up to 3 (three) lines should be enclosed in quotation marks.

  14. Quotes of 4 (four) or more lines should be block indented, without quotation marks, in size 11, and with a left indent of 4 cm.

  15. References should follow the author-date style: (LAST NAME, YEAR, PAGE) or Last Name (YEAR, PAGE).

  16. For works with more than three authors, use (LAST NAME [et al.], YEAR, PAGE).

  17. For works without a listed author, cite the title of the work or document, year, and page.

  18. For more specific information about a work, the author(s) can use a footnote to indicate volume, issue, edition, collection, translation, etc.

  19. The bibliography, references, and sources should be included at the end of the article in alphabetical order by last name or title, divided into primary sources and secondary literature.

  20. For works by the same author or institution, the last name or title should be repeated, and the dash should no longer be used.

  21. Footnotes should be for explanatory purposes only, in size 10, single spaced, justified, and numbered with Arabic numerals.

  22. Images should be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals, accompanied by a title, which appears above the image. They should be inserted in the text with a minimum size of 5 x 5 cm and must have good resolution. Below the image, a caption should be placed with a brief description and the source.

  23. Titles of Books, articles, films, documentaries, drawings, games, brands, etc., should be in italics.

  24. Use quotation marks to highlight a word or term; do not use bold.

 

Reference standard: If your source or reference is not cited in the models below, consult ABNT NBR 6023, 2018 edition or later.

 

Book: LAST NAME, First Name. Title: subtitle. Translation. Edition. City: Publisher, year.

 

Book or document with no author: TITLE: subtitle. Translation. Edition. City: Publisher, year.

 

Chapter or part of a Book: LAST NAME, First Name. Title of chapter. In: LAST NAME, First Name. Title of Book: subtitle. Translation. Edition. City: Publisher, year, pagination.

 

Journal article: LAST NAME, First Name. Title of article. Journal Title, volume/number/year/edition, pagination, month, year.

 

Multiple authors: follow the procedure for Book, chapter, and article, inserting the names of up to four authors. If there are more than four authors, only the first is cited, followed by et al.

 

Academic work: LAST NAME, First Name. Title: subtitle. Monograph/Dissertation/Thesis (Undergraduate/Master's/Doctorate in...), institution, city, year.

Online text: LAST NAME, First Name. Title. Date (if available). Available at: www... Accessed on: dd.mm.yy.

 

Online text with no author: TITLE. Date (if available). Available at: www... Accessed on: dd.mm.yy.

 

Audiovisual source: TITLE: subtitle. Direction: name of director. Production: name of producer. Location: Film Distributor, year. Media (VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, Digital, etc.), duration.

ENTRIES

  • Submitted proposals must be in Word or OpenOffice format.

  • Can only be submitted by one author, who must omit their name from the text, following the recommendations for article submissions.

  • Should be 3 to 7 pages long.

  • The use of one image related to the entry's topic is mandatory, and this must appear at the beginning of the text, below the title and author's name.

  • Each entry allows the use of up to three images.

  • The title of the entry will be the same name as the analyzed topic (e.g., Caravel, Compass, Sextant, Lighthouse).

  • The use of direct quotations is not permitted, only indirect quotations.

  • The use of footnotes is not permitted.

  • The formatting guidelines are the same as for articles.

  • The content must be objective and instructive, aiming to explain generally difficult terms and concepts in simple and formal language.

  • The topic of an entry can only be published once in each of the languages accepted by the journal. However, such topics can be addressed in articles more than once, provided they are relevant.
